Supporting Municipal Green Spaces with SoilSense

Recently, we spoke with Linda Vollbehr, Team Leader for Parks and Green Spaces at Køge Kommune.
Linda and her team began using SoilSense three years ago, as they were looking for a way to improve their irrigation based on accurate data. “We wanted to have confidence in our irrigation decisions,” Linda explained. “Data helps us be precise about when and where to water, which was essential for improving our practices.”
After considering their options, Linda and her team chose the SoilSense system to help them reach these goals. Here’s more from our conversation:
How has using SoilSense changed your daily practices?
It has changed our processes in two key ways:
We now use less water. The sensors revealed that our soil retained moisture longer than we expected after winter. Although the surface soil looked dry, deeper at 40 cm, there was still ample water. As a result, we delayed our irrigation start from mid-May to June, saving around15% in both water and irrigation-related work hours.

Our irrigation schedule is no longer rigid. Previously, we followed a fixed schedule for summer with minor adjustments for rainfall. Now, we know exactly where and when to irrigate, thanks to the detailed insights provided by SoilSense.
Was the system easy to install?
Yes, the new datalogger made installation and relocating units a breeze. The setup process was very straightforward, and the SoilSense team provided excellent support whenever we had questions.
What’s your favorite feature of the SoilSense system?
The simplicity of getting clear and actionable insights on where irrigation is necessary is my favorite aspect.
How was your experience with SoilSense's customer support?
The support team was responsive and ensured all our issues were addressed promptly.
How would your daily work be different without the SoilSense system?
We would have to revert to our old processes, which would increase our water usage and work hours by more than 15%.
This conversation with Linda shows how municipalities like Køge Kommune are using SoilSense to improve their daily work and focus on sustainability in their green spaces.
